Performance Ensembles

Symphonic Band

(Grades 9-12) This band will explore intermediate to advanced musical selections and techniques. In the fall, the band will function as the Bear River Pep Band at football games. The Symphonic Band will hold several performances including our Fall Concert, "Winter Winds", and "Bruins of Note" concerts. The Symphonic Band also performs at the Golden Empire Music Festival and often undertakes a performance tour in the Spring. Each member of this group will have the opportunity to perform a solo or small ensemble selection during the Solo and Ensemble Festival at Sacramento State University. Students will also be encouraged to audition for various honor band opportunities throughout the year. We will be studying music theory with opportunities to arrange and compose - and to perform that music. All members of this ensemble are expected to practice daily outside of class, maintain an online journal, and be listening regularly to wind band recordings.

Jazz Band

(Grades 9-12) [Co-requisite: enrollment in Symphonic Band] Jazz Band is an auditioned, performance intensive course for the advanced musician. A broad sample of jazz music from various styles and periods will be performed in a Big Band format. Students should demonstrate proper stylistic technique, articulations, blend and balance, intonation, improvisation, and facility on his/her instrument. The Jazz Band will perform at many events throughout the year, including our own "Swing Into The Night" Big Band Dance; the Folsom, Reno, East Bay, and/or Santa Cruz Jazz Festivals, local service club meetings, and more. Members of this ensemble are expected to practice daily outside of class beyond their practice time for Symphonic Band, maintain an online journal, and be listening to jazz recordings regularly.

Starlite Express Stage Band

(Grades 9-12) [Co-requisite: enrollment in at least one period of a Band or Choir ensemble.] Starlite Express Stage Band is an auditioned, high-powered stage band that backs up Bear River's show choir, Starlite Express. Students play a variety of pop/rock music and will be called upon to contribute visually to the show through some light choreography. Starlite Band will perform at many events throughout the year, including our own "Fantasy of Stars" Choral Invitational; "Puttin on the Ritz", local service club meetings, and more. Members of this ensemble are expected to practice daily outside of class beyond their practice time for their primary ensemble. This is not a for-credit class, but rather an extra-curricular ensemble, but rather an extra-curricular ensemble that meets twice a week during Bruin Time and every other week in the evening. A contract must be signed upon your selection to the band. Commitment to attendance at rehearsals and performances is expected in order maintain your membership in the group. You may NOT sign up for a Bruin Time enrichment on Starlite Band days.
